Ending Crisis in the Niger Delta

There is no doubt that the Niger Delta crisis is arguably one of the greatest challenges facing Nigeria as a nation. As many commentatorts have argued, the challenge in the Niger Delta is a poignant metaphor for the crisis of governance and development in Nigeria.[i] Paradoxically, ending the Nigeria Delta crisis is also the key to a better Nigeria. As one scholar put it, the Niger Delta has become amblematic of all that is wrong with Nigeria and yet remains indicative of the hopes of a better Nigeria.[ii]

The Niger Delta has slipped into crisis with high level of uncertainty, instability, human rights violations and danger to life and property. The manifestations of this crisis has affected all facets of society in the Niger Delta exarcabating the underdevelopment of the region. Meanwhile, the region provides the bulk of the revenue for the running of the entire country. However, the response to the crisis in the past have failed to resolve the problem. There is therefore the need to review the manifestations of the crisis, its impact and previous responses with a view to proposing alternative framework for the resolution of the crisis in the Nigeria Delta.
